Red Carpet Report: 2012 Academy Awards

Photobucket

The Oscar's red carpet is a fashion lover's Super Bowl. Who wore whom and how is the topic of conversation and no one even cares who won an actual Oscar. The trends this season were white and shimmery along with reddish orange tones.

J. Lo and Octavia Spencer went head to head on the shimmery silver gown and I have to say that Octavia won by an areola. Octavia glowed in her Shoji gown and the fit was amazing. It goes to show that you don't need to me a size 2 to look amazing. Rooney Mara and Gwyneth take the cake on the waif look and while I love Rooney's Givenchy Haute Couture gown I am soooo over her "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" look. Gwyneth wins the white off and that cape is ah-ma-zing.

From off white to gold these ladies didn't necessarily wow me but they took some fashion chances. Firstly, Shailene Woodley in her grandmother's wedding gown. Not. Good. She describes this dress as, "sooooo me" but it doesn't do anything for her amazing 17-year-old body. Cameron Diaz's Gucci dress is simple and sleek with a nice finish at the end. Not sure why she even was invited as "Bad Teacher" wasn't nominated. Kristen Wiig again went for a colorless dress and this time she almost looks good. If only she stopped wearing dresses the same color as her skin we might actually be able to see her on the red carpet. Lastly, Miss George Clooney looks statuesque in a gold Marchesa gown complete with hip rosette. She wins this round.

Red and orange are the colors of the season and these ladies didn't disappoint. My best dressed goes to Michelle Williams; her pixie, the peplum, the pink purse. I love how she pulled the look together. Emma Stone looks overwhelmed by her neck bow and I don't think Natalie's point d'esprit Dior gown photographed well. And last but not least, Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen. Jessica, thank you for wearing this. We all needed a little reminder of the great Lee during this time of couture.

TopShop X Mary Katrantzou

Photobucket

I have been a long time fan of Mary Katrantzou's printed dresses. Her mix or architectural shapes and bright prints set her pieces in a category all of their own. I was so happy to hear she would be doing a 10 piece capsule collection for TopShop. Hitting stores on February 17th the collection includes structured dresses, easy tops and cropped pants all in her signature printed fabric.

I am in LOVE LOVE LOVE with this collection. I wish could dress like this everyday. I love the sleek lines, blacks, reds and grays, architectural shapes and luxe fabrics. Those shoes! Those jackets! I want it all!

J. Crew Fall 2012

Photobucket

I liked but wasn't in love with the J. Crew Fall 2012 presentation. The accessories look exciting with shearling and dyed skin detail but over all I am not completely wowed. I think Jenna Lyons was designing too much for herself and not enough for her clientele, she even managed to inject herself into the presentation (the Jenna look-a-like in chartreuse and stripes).

Black and Gold

After carefully reviewing the red carpet looks from the Grammy Awards I was left with a feeling of disappointment, until I realized that the understated elegance of a chic black dress was the theme of the night. With Adele and Rihanna in a custom Armani gowns, Gwyneth in Stella McCartney and Alicia Keys in Alexandre Vauthier Couture the perfect LBG (Little Black Gown) ruled the red carpet.

Hourglass Half full?

This scares me. Not because I am about to accuse Romanian model Ioana Spangenberg of being anorexic or anything but because she looks like a full on alien. I can't even focus on her face to see if she is actually beautiful because my eyes are glued to her 20" waist. The part that bothers me the most is that people are saying she is 'hourglass' shaped. I am sorry, she is maybe the shape of the mini hourglass you get in a game of Scattegories but in the classic sense of the word, Ioana is far from the Marilyn Monroe's and Bridgette Bardot's of hourglass fame.

Can't we just call her freakish and get over it?
